Stay Safe on the Job: Top Tips for Face Painters
Your safety matters just as much as your brushwork. Here are my must-read top tips for staying safe at gigs.
1. On your booking form, make sure you have the client’s phone number, email address, the address of the venue and if possible the client’s home address.
2. Scope it out first. Do a Google Maps street view drive-by to make sure the address exists.
3. Be scam-aware. A common trick targets entertainers via fake bookings – often asking you to pay a “DJ” or “photographer” on their behalf and promising reimbursement. Don’t fall for it! Legitimate clients won’t ask you to transfer money to third parties.

4. Always share your location before setting off. Let a trusted friend or family member know the full address of your job, start/end times, and contact details for the organiser. Arrange a check-in once you’ve arrived – and again when you’re packed up and leaving.
5. Use a ‘Safe Word’ system. Set up a simple code with your check-in person (e.g. “Tell the cat I forgot her biscuits”). If things feel off, use your safe word in a message or call to alert them discreetly.
6. Stay connected. Carry a power bank so your phone stays charged for check-ins and maps.

7. Set clear boundaries. At events, keep a professional distance. Don’t share personal details, and don’t let yourself be pressured into staying longer than agreed without fair compensation.
8. If possible, avoid accepting last-minute solo home bookings unless you’re confident in the source.
9. Trust your instincts. If an enquiry or booking feels wrong (too vague, pushy, or just off), it’s okay to walk away. You don’t owe anyone an explanation for prioritising your safety.
